Lessons that every senior communications leader should know

I’ve had a pretty eventful few years. I had already reached my goal of becoming a Director of Communications before I even reached 40 with a seat on the Executive Committee and the chance to lead a fantastic team of hard working and talented communications professionals.

I thought I had everything I ever wanted. I was wrong. In the latest Moxy Vlog, I share the four lessons I learned since turning 40…

Lesson #1. Everyone has a breaking point. Everyone.

It came as a shock to me – and my partner – that I wasn’t invincible. I’m thankful that he was there to help scrape me off the floor and help me believe in myself again. Please try hard not to find yours.

Lesson #2. Resilience is an incredibly dangerous word.

We’re seduced into thinking that resilience is a good thing. However, think about the impact is has on your health, relationships, and the way that you want to live your life. I say f@£k resilience!

Lesson # 3. Energy is replaceable, but only if you put yourself on charge.

This was something I was really bad.  I always planned to take leave just as soon as things were quieter, calmer, etc…. Well, as soon as doesn’t come unless you make it. Book time off and stick to it.

Lesson #4. You really do need to put your gas mask on before you can help others.

You can push yourself so hard that you don’t just damage yourself, but you have a negative impact on others. That’s why I now only work with people that bring out my best, so I can offer my best in return.

We’re not going to get everything right in life, but we can learn the lessons and try to do things better the next time around…

I learnt these lessons the hard way. I share them in the hope that it might help you avoid the same pitfalls.

Be brave

Be bold

Be different

And Happy Birthday to me 🎉
