I talk to communications leaders every day about the importance of getting out and walking every day.

The truth is it’s too easy to never leave our desk, especially when we’re working from home.

I speak to senior comms leaders all the time who tell me they had great intentions of getting out and walking, but then got busy and the day slipped away without ever leaving their desk.

Good intentions alone aren’t enough, so here are three things you can try:

 1. Start your day with a walk

This is my preferred option. You start the day fresh and get your body moving. Then if things get incredibly busy, which they inevitably do, you know that you’ve always made time to have that walk first.

2. Plan in a walk with a purpose

If you decide to walk later in the day, book it in your diary with an action. For example, getting some lunch, walking the dog, meeting someone or even posting something important. Having a reason helps.

3. Walk and talk without distraction

Introduce walking calls for your 1:1 meetings. When you are on the phone, there are absolutely no distractions. No emails popping up. No notifications. You can give your undivided attention.

Oh and one final tip: keep a warm coat and wellies by the front door to avoid making bad weather excuses, especially in the depths of February.

Whatever gets you out and about, you’ll be thankful that you did…

Be brave
Be bold
Be different

And make sure you get out and about at least once every day. It’s probably where you’ll get your best ideas anyhow
