I’m often asked how you can get the best out of your team.

Getting the best out of your team can be tricky, because we don’t see the world as it is, we see it as we are…

🤔 People don’t remember what you said
🤔 They won’t remember (or even know) what you did
🤔 They just remember how they felt

So, in today’s Vlog, I want to share with you two different perspectives of leadership during Covid: How it felt to me and how it felt to my team.

I share these perspectives aftertime to reflect and with hindsight, but they are based on my real experience of leading a team of 100+ communications professionals in a busy government department during Covid.

Leadership

The thing is, as leaders we are working so hard to do what we think is right, to give everything to what we think our team needs, that sometimes we forget to take a breath, to take a moment, and ask them what they really want, no, what they really need, from us.

In fact, best intentions from leaders can result in hours of senior discussions rather than dedicating time to truly listen to what people actually need.

Sound familiar?

If so, consider thinking differently about helping your team. Instead of searching for solutions, ask and truly listen to what will make the most difference for them.

You might be surprised at what you learn!

Be brave
Be bold
Be different

And always make time to ask people what they really need from you as a leader.
