As the UK goes to the polls, we reflect on the good, the bad and the ugly of the campaigns

As the latest Moxy Vlog is going live on 4th July 2024, I couldn’t resist offering some quick reflections on the last six weeks of campaigning from a (non-political) communications perspective.

We like to end our Vlogs on a positive note, so let’s look at them in reverse…..

The ugly

A lot of the campaigns have been critical and, at times, personal. I would always advise to keep things positive and to use all the airtime that you have to talk about the great things

that you plan to do.

The bad

Well, if we’re honest, it started pretty badly in the pouring rain at Downing Street and went downhill from there. The real lesson is that, yes, your messages matter, but the image matters so much more.

The good

For me, it’s the campaign that decided not to take itself too seriously. Cumulating this week in their leader bungee jumping while shouting “do something different today, vote for us”! It was creative, it was different and, as a result, it cut through the coverage.

To me, it’s a great lesson to have the confidence to do things differently and not to take things too seriously, while still landing those key messages.

I look forward to speaking to you in whatever brave new world we wake up to on the 5th July, but in the meantime…

Be brave
Be bold
Be brilliant

And always be as creative as you can!
